A friend and I paddled from Lake Bemidji to Lake Plantagenet via the Schoolcraft River yesterday. It was a long, but beautiful paddle. I spent a majority of the trip thinking, “Now this is what it means to be feeling Minnesota.” We paddled through three lakes (Irving, Carr, and Marquette) and miles of narrow, winding river to reach our endpoint. The scenery was so gorgeous I felt the need stop and take pictures every quarter mile, which is no small feat in a kayak. My partner was probably ready to throw my camera in the lake by the end of our trip. We made great time getting to Plantagenet though, even with my frequent photography breaks. I was thankful that I had the sense to pack some snacks, I was pretty hungry by the time we stopped. Note to outdoor enthusiasts: PB&J sammies are the only way to go when you can’t refrigerate your food. The trip back provided us with some challenges. We paddled a bit out of our way in trying to find the river outlet on Lake Marquette. I wasn’t exactly a happy paddler after a half hour of searching. Thankfully I had a paddling buddy that was kind enough to try and cheer me up. Once we made it over that hurdle the rest of the trip went pretty smoothly.
I stopped to take a few more pictures along the way, mostly as an excuse to give my arms a break. The last stretch from Lake Irving back to the boathouse felt like it wasn’t going to end. We were pushing a headwind and I was pretty tired by that point. The struggle to the finish just made the feeling as we rounded the sailboats in front of the OPC that much sweeter. It was an awesome day trip! Thanks to my paddling partner for another great expedition.
